Toyota Vehicle Wait Time Guide (September 2023 Updated)

New vehicle orders are taking longer to process because of the growing vehicle shortage. Hybrid vehicle waiting times are typically much longer than gas vehicle waiting times.

Since the waiting period could change at any time, it’s important to contact your local dealership as soon as possible and place your order if you need a car quickly.

World events, shortages of necessary parts, and natural disasters are just a few of the many potential causes of prolonged vehicle waiting times.

It may be even more challenging to get a car if you don’t already lease a Toyota vehicle or have a trade-in vehicle to offer the dealership, as some dealerships now prioritize vehicle assignments to customers that benefit the dealer the most. We’ve heard that some dealers won’t even take an order if the customer doesn’t meet certain requirements; has this ever happened to you? Tell us in the comments section at the bottom of the page!

If you’re interested, we’ve also compiled a Wait Time Guide for Honda Vehicles to help you with your research.

Latest Toyota Vehicle Wait Time

We contacted Toyota dealerships around the country to compile this list of estimated wait times for various models. This list of projected wait times is provided for reference purposes only.

Even though we do our best to make sure the information on this page is correct, If you are serious about buying a car, you should check with your local Toyota dealer for more accurate estimates.

The lack of positive press surrounding Toyota’s first fully electric vehicle, the bZ4X, is good news for those still on the waiting list for a unit. Several car lots told us that customers sometimes cancel orders, meaning you might get your vehicle sooner if you place one now. Higher-end trim levels have become less desirable due to the dramatic price differences between trims, and may even be available at a dealer.

Estimated Waiting Period:

Due to the lack of a redesign for the 2024 Camry Hybrid, it will have the shortest waiting period of any Toyota hybrid. Even so, it’s possible that the wait time will be over a year in length. The dealers we’ve spoken with have all said that the SE trim is the most in-demand out of the 5 trims available, so expect a lengthier wait time for the SE if you’re interested in purchasing one.

Moderate Wait
Estimated Waiting Period:

Until recently, the Corolla Sedan was the go-to vehicle for getting a unit quickly, but now there is a long wait. A growing number of people have noticed longer lines at the gas station for the Corolla. There are rumours that Toyota could be planning to reduce production of gas models to make way for a Hybrid-only Corolla lineup in the coming years, so this could be the start of a new-normal with less gas Corolla in production.

The Corolla Hybrid has never been more impressive than it is this year. Toyota has expanded its lineup of this vehicle with all-wheel drive. In total, there are three AWD trims, with an FWD serving as the entry-level option. Unfortunately, due to increased demand, the waiting time to acquire the AWD capability has lengthened considerably. The Toyota Camry Hybrid is a good option for anyone looking to get behind the wheel a little faster.

Among Toyota’s lineup of cars, the Corolla Hatchback is the smallest option for buyers. The Hatchback may be losing ground to larger vehicles, but it still maintains its devoted following. There are only four trim levels to pick from for the Corolla Hatchback, which only runs on gas. Dealers we’ve spoken to say the waiting period is generally faster than for the sedan variant.

  4. After one year and eight months of waiting I gave up and bought another Subaru. The entire ordering process at our Toyota dealership lacked transparency. We were never given any information about our position in line or the rate of vehicle arrival. I couldn’t help but wonder if some customers were prioritized due to the higher value of their trade in or the length of their financing term. Good luck to the rest of you , I’ll be driving my new Subaru next week.

  5. We’ve been a Toyota family for 25 years. I ordered a Highlander Limited Gas in Jan 2023 and was told 4 months. Got a couple of calls while waiting saying there is this red Highlander Platinum for 10K more than MSRP or this silver for 10K more, and it’s a “cancelled order.” Said no, still waiting for my original order and preferred colour/trim. My gut feel is that the dealers are offering vehicles to people on the wait list to see what people will pay. I doubt these are all ‘cancelled orders’. I also notice that Toyota the company has made 24% higher profits in 2023, which makes me wonder if they have a new profit model (restrain supply, lower expenses and sell for more $$). Ready to pull the plug on my order and buy another brand.

  10. We placed an order for a gas Camry XSE in March 2023, east GTA, ON and were told ~8 months. We’re at six months now, and I don’t feel as though it’s going to arrive any time soon. Clearly we won’t be getting a 2023 model (but that’s ok).

I’ve been driving Toyotas exclusively for 30+ years, and I’m saddened by the state of things here in Canada with our lack of inventory, and moreso by the lack of answers. In some of the Camry groups I’m in, I see people are able to buy off the lot in the US, including 2024 models. It’s shameful.

  12. I am in GTA. I ordered a Gas Rav 4 limited grey in Nov 2022, got a limited white in late April 2023 on a cancelled order. Due to it’s a “cancelled” order and I need the car badly, I had to pay extra packages that “came” with the order. Things like running board, rain visor, rust proofing, tire warranty plan and ECP. All these weren’t on my original order.
After reading all the threads here I am thinking what happens on my original order, it probably becomes another “cancelled” order. What if I chose to wait? The cars are out there, but it’s always the trade off you have to decide.
Last week I placed an order on Sienna limited. Sales told me a year-ish since I have Sienna to trade in and get a car from them. Let’s see how long it takes, but I am not in rush this time lol.

I anticipate the order will be fulfilled in Winter 2024 with a 2024 model with a higher price and lower trade in value of my current vehicle.

  14. I placed a deposit on a Toyota Highlander Platinum Hybrid in June 2022. We still have not received a car.

Our sales agreement noted our desire for a black or white exterior. We also noted we would consider any color interior, except black. On 12 July 2023, McGeorge Toyota of Richmond first offered us a conforming car except it had a silver exterior, which we would have accepted but for the fact it had a black interior. That said, the car had to be built.

We realize there is a shortage of cars, but we did not expect to have to wait over a year for delivery when we placed our order.

The salesperson at McGeorge has been responsive to our inquiries, and we have been led to believe the problem is not the cause of the dealer. It is a Toyota problem. I am beginning to have some concerns about a failure of a part on any Toyota I ultimately receive. Will Toyota be able to replace a critical part that fails in a timely manner?

Of course, the model year changed and changed my order to the Corolla Hybrid LE or AWD. Visited my dealer every two months and spent an hour with the sales person. Ended up with the SE model. Don’t like the idea of the replacement cost of those low profile tires but the independent rear suspension, which does not come with the LE, is sublime. The electric AWD fantastic in the winter. I’m a throttle/handbrake steering kind of guy but the computer does a great job of controlling brakes and throttle independently on all four corners. Know, from my mechanic that the mechanical system is less than reliable. Guessing the simplicity of the electric motor will improve this.

My current Toyota gave out after 20 years and I needed a vehicle RIGHT NOW ! !…Nothing, (no matter what vehicle you would settle for ) at the dealerships was available, as those arriving were all pre sold, many months ago.
Well….I Started looking at other manufactures.
Found Mazda had some vehicles on their lot. Took a test drive of their CX-5, which is a close competitor to the RAV4, but more luxurious and a great reputation for quality, reliability and especially performance. No Hybrid, but I didn’t really care.
I purchased a top of the line, fully loaded CX-5 Signature Turbo that had just arrived and even though it had more options than the Rav4 Limited I had ordered. It was less expensive with the same warranty as Toyota, but with unlimited mileage.
When I received my Mazda CX-5, I drove to Toyota, showed them what I purchased and cancelled my RAV4.
I have to say, Mazda is a vehicle you don’t think of because they are a very small Japanese company but all their CX-5 SUVs , are built in Japan and the quality is amazing.

I would like to get a Venza to replace the Highlander eventually but not sure how far ahead I need to place an order. You should have no worries with you CX5. Based on the 5 years we have owned the CX5, it’s quality and reliability is just as good as Toyota. I would not hesitate to switch to a Mazda for replacing the Highlander if the waiting time is too long and when the Mazda hybrid comes in 2024 – 2025.

    • Toyota.ca posted the 2023 Prius Prime pricing at the beginning of April 2023. The first shipment to the U.S. is expected in May but not sure the timing for Canada. I’m in Ontario and has placed an order as well in April but I think B.C. and Quebec will get first dip as they have provincial rebate on top of the federal rebate. Depending on which province you are in, it may be a long wait, up to 2 years, I was told be the dealer.
